Arizona’s Zero Deductible Full Glass Coverage Law

Arizona is one of six states with a free windshield replacement law. Meaning glass coverage is included with all Arizona comprehensive auto insurance policies. This law includes your policy deductible not applying to windshield claims, and you paying nothing out of pocket. See miscellaneous coverages for details.

"Known as Zero Deductible States, Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts and South Carolina require insurance companies to allow those with comprehensive insurance on their vehicles to pay for and add windshield replacement with no deductible to their policies. Policies in Massachusetts and Florida must fully cover only windshields, but those in South Carolina and Kentucky must cover replacement of other glass as well." - per car windshields.info

The windshield replacement law doesn’t apply to liability-only policies. Remember that liability coverage is for the harm you cause to other people, and comprehensive/collision coverage is for damage to your own car. In order for the windshield replacement law to apply, you need to have a comprehensive policy covering your car. Full windshield replacements without insurance may cost anywhere from $300 to $400!

This law was passed due to the scorching desert days that turn into cold nights causing thermals stress on windshields. Unnoticeable chips can turn into large cracks due to the temperature fluctuation. These conditions are no the fault of drivers and driving with a damaged windshield can be dangerous. Arizona state officials want drivers to get their windshields replaced quickly without the worry of cost.

Will My Insurance Go Up After a Windshield Replacement Claim in Arizona?

Insurance rates will generally not go up after a windshield claim. Arizona feels that if you were in a crash, using defensive driving techniques could have avoided the accident, even if you aren’t at-fault. However, a damaged windshield almost never has anything to do with your driving. As long as you're not abusing the system your insurance rates will not go up after a windshield replacement claim.

If you have a high number of claims per year, it's assumed that you’re consistently driving in high risk areas such as heavy construction or unpaved roads. The best advice is to inform your insurance provider if this is your situation to avoid fluctuating glass coverage pricing.

New residents, snowbirds, visitors, and some students might have an auto insurance policy written in another state. If this is the case, your insurance policy would typically follow the laws of that state instead of Arizona. You may need to pay a deductible on windshield claims, since Arizona's free windshield replacement law may not apply to you.

Confirm whether or not your insurance policy will follow you to Arizona. If you don’t follow the terms of your policy, you may have any auto glass claims you file denied.
